North Cyprus Flora
Between 1988 and 1993, Dr. Deryck Viney collected over 1,000 different species. He documented his findings in an illustrated book called “An Illustrated Flora of North Cyprus” This book is now considered an essential guide for amateur and professional botanists. Spring is the best time to view the flowers of North Cyprus. There are over a hundred Cyprus endemic species and nineteen North Cyprus endemics to discover. However, keep in mind that the amount of rainfall the previous winter will affect what’s blooming. The summer heat from April onwards tends to bring an end to wildflowers, so you’ll hardly find any blooming in May or June.
If you’re looking for some early springtime color, keep an eye out for the Oxalis pes-caprae. This yellow-flowering plant is often seen as a nuisance by farmers, but it does add a nice splash of color to the landscape in the early part of the year. Next to bloom are the anemones, which come in pale purple, white, red, and blue. These flowers decorate the landscape with their colorful displays.
Another not-to-be-missed flower is the orchid. Orchid walks and orchid hunting are very popular pastimes, with the Ophrys fusca (the Brown Bee Orchid) and Orchis morio (Green-winged Orchis) being two of the most sought-after varieties. These flowers are generally found throughout North Cyprus forests and on rocky hillsides. The bee orchid is a lot smaller than you might think, so you need to keep your eyes open. A good place to look is on the hillsides near the Five Finger Mountains or the rocky hills of Bellapais and Ozankoy.
You may notice Mandrakes (Mandragora officinarum) along the roadsides and at historical landmarks in Northern Cyprus. These plants have flat clusters of green leaves with dark blue to white flowers in the center. Crown Daisies (Chrysanthemum coronarium) are also common in fields, with their pale orange flowers adding a touch of warmth to the scenery.
The Herbarium at the Alevkaya Forest Reserve station is a great place to see beautiful plants all year round. The herbarium was opened in 1989 by botanist Dr. Deryck Viney and the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry. 800 pressed examples of North Cyprus’s rare flora can be found there.
Trees in Northern Cyprus
In addition to North Cyprus flora, the island is home to a wide variety of trees, including the jacaranda, frangipani, jasmine and many more. These trees provide beautiful colors and scents that add to the natural beauty of the island. Judas, pepper, almond, and carob trees are also common, and their fruits are considered a treat by many who live on the island.
Citrus trees are important role in North Cyprus, specially Güzelyurt, providing fruit for residents and visitors alike. There are three types of oranges grown in North Cyprus, each with its own unique flavor and purpose. Around November, these trees are bursting with fruit, making them a sight to behold. If you’re ever in North Cyprus during this time of year, make sure to check out the citrus trees!
